Creators Glen Morgan and James Wong explain how their war beyond Space came to an abrupt end.

Although the men and women of
Space: Above And Beyond
fought valiantly,
the SF adventure
lasted only one season.

Don't credit the cancellation of the ambitious Fox SF-TV series Space: Above And Beyond to creators James Wong and Glen Morgan.

"I don't blame the failure of Space: Above And Beyond on us," says Morgan, who serves, along with Wong, as executive producers on the second season of Millennium. "It wasn't like we really sucked or had no business being on that show."

Almost two years later, the pair admittedly still irritated by the abrupt demise of their promising homage to war, honour and loyalty. "We still have fights with people at Fox over how much of a chance the show was given," stares Morgan. "We felt it could have been a hit if it had been given more time."

While enthused by the series'current rebroadcasts
on the Sci-Fi Channel,
creators James Wong and Glen Morgan
doubt that their heroes
will ever suit up
for more Space action.

But while the series was beginning to hit its creative stride, Space was still handicapped by what many industry veterans consider to be the graveyard of time slots. "Our job was to give the network an OK, entertaining show, which I believe we did," laments Morgan. "But I think the show would have had a better chance to succeed if it had not been on Sunday nights at 7 p.m."

Wong elaborates, "I do sort of blame the network for putting us on when they did because, in many instances, we were going up against overruns of Sunday football games. The shows we were writing for Space were structured in such a way that you had to watch the whole show to get it. With the football overruns, people were missing the first 8-10 minutes of the show, and, once you've missed that much, you might as well not watch it at all."

Morgan reveals that, while no second season scripts had been written, he and Wong knew 'where we were going'.

He provides a few specific story line premises: "McQueen [James Morrison] was going to come back to get his false leg and rehab, so he could do all of the Best Years of Our Lives-Coming Home kinds of things," offers Morgan. "Somebody was going to replace him, someone that Vansen [Kristen Cloke] was going to become close to. The rest of the unit was going to decide that the new commander was a bum, so that was going to create some tension. The war was coming closer to home, and McQueen was finding himself feeling quite useless. We had some good things planned. I wish it could have grown."
