This Boy's Life
by Melissa Thompson "Seventeen" Magazine 1996

Dodging danger is a way of life for Cooper Hawkes, the rowdy rebel soldier Rodney Rowland plays on Fox's Space: Above and Beyond.

"Oh, man, it's like every episode I'm running through these huge explosions and shooting off these giant guns." exclaims Rodney. But, hey, this Malibu native's job is cake compared to his real-life action adventures.

Practically since he was old enough to swim, he's been seeking out the big kahuna ("the big one" in surferspeak).
"I love surfing giant waves," says Rodney. "I used to go out no matter how rough the water was and get eaten alive."

These days, with an out-of-this-world TV show and movie deals in the works, Rodney is easing up on tackling the tough tubes.
"I've worked too hard to get where I am to be taking those kinds of risks," he admits.

Besides, the waves Rodney grew up riding are so crowded it's like surfing in rush-hour traffic.
"It can get pretty stressful," he says. "Sometimes it hardly seems worth it."

Like, yo, dudes, can't you see this guy needs his space!
"It's strange. It's like I need to surf," he confesses. "It's religion for me."
